New Kid On the Block
Bill Shade
Well now! I have that old feeling
again! Having changed restaurants, I once again am the new
kid on the block. It matters not that half the staff are of
the age that they could be my grand children! I still have
the same set of emotions I experienced years ago when I had to
attend a new school. Some of these are fear, jealousy and
shyness, just to mention a few.
The first question I always ask is why
did I make the change knowing that it would be this
uncomfortable??? New people, new menu, new chef, and hell-
they even number the tables backwards!! All the great waiter
shorthand that I have used over the past few years now makes
no sense to the bartender or the chef- they must be foreign!
What I thought was rare is medium rare, what I thought took
garnish takes nothing, and whoever designed this wait station
was a sadist! These are just a sample of my thoughts from the
first night. I refuse to write down my thoughts as I
attempted to check out the first night!!
The kicker of it all is I know I'm doing
the right thing! The learning curve is really quite short and
soon this will all make sense. The beauty of the deal is that
it is healthier for me to be here. I'm experiencing short
term discomfort to improve the quality of my life! Sounds a
lot like delayed gratification to me! Could be there is also
a touch of maturation taking place. I am not in my high chair
screaming at the top of my lungs “ I want what I want and I
want it right now!”
Amazing how I put myself in positions to
practice what I preach. I am the rookie. I have the
opportunity to get out of my high chair and join the team or I
can stand there and tell everyone how wrong he or she is doing
things! I am going to try something different. I think I'll
try their way for a while and see how it works! Who
knows...maybe my old ways can be improved upon. Maybe I'll
try some teamwork and lead by example instead of with my
mouth!! What is the worst that can happen?

Where Do We Begin?
Suzie Dawson
After hearing the news last week, it
reaffirmed my great desire to do my part in making this world
a better place. How does one begin doing this? By starting
with the only people we can truly change- ourselves.
The big question is- where do we
begin??By being the best person we can be.By always choosing
love, instead of fear. By waking up each morning thankful to
be alive.By being part of the solution instead of part of the
problem. By looking within. By healing.
Okay, you’re thinking, these ideas are
great but maybe a bit much. (I get a little carried away at
times!) If all of this seems overwhelming, start with one
simple change. That is all it takes to begin to make a
difference.Take one area of your life that you are frustrated
with and vow to change it.
Here are some steps to help bring about
change.
1. Set your
intention to make the change. Intention is everything. If you
do not intend for it to happen, it will not. Also remember
that we get what we focus our attention on. If we focus on
what needs to be changed, we will remain stuck. If we focus on
the fact that the change has been made, that is what will
happen.
2. Be
thankful for the change. Start each day by giving thanks that
the change has been made. (It’s called “acting as if.”) When I
quit smoking a while back, this was the key for me. Every
morning when I awoke, I gave thanks for letting it (the
smoking) go. I kept my focus on the gratitude and not the
difficulty of it.We do have a choice. We can make change
difficult or easy.It all depends on how we look at it.
3.
Surrender. This step cannot be overlooked. Trust me, I have
tried to leave this out many times and failed! Once we have
gotten clear on what we need to change, given thanks for the
change, we must let it go. After all, how can the change be
made if we do not release it? This requires trust and a lot of
deep breathing. You can do it.

Dessert
The dessert pick for the week is “Awaken
the Giant Within” by Tony Robbins. I came across this book by
accident as I was cleaning out a closet. It was one of the 1st
motivational books I ever read and one of the most
inspirational. If you are ready to embrace change and be the
best that you can be, go out and get this book. If you are
willing to take action, it will absolutely change your life.
