How It Works

Bill Shade

What is happening to me?  I enjoy going to work!  I have taken a substantial pay cut to work more shifts and I’m having a blast! There is a newness, a freshness to this place that is contagious!!  The staff is not so burned out that everyone smells like a pile of smoldering leaves.  They even smile when they are not at the table in front of the customer!

My first question is, “Is this really a restaurant?”  My second is, “Could it be the salt air?”  My third is, “Is it simply age or perhaps the more relaxed menu?”  Perhaps it is management.  Then I realize it is the answer I always chose in multiple-choice questions.  All of the above!!

I have survived the dreaded change!!  I am still the new kid on the block and that is OK!  I am having fun at work again for the first time in years.  I took a pay cut and it has been worth every penny for the improvement in my mental health!  I consider this money well spent!

The environment is relaxed, no more character assaults due to improper delivery of forks and knives!  The chef says yes to special requests and does not act as if someone has killed him because they would like the sauce on the side!!  The real kicker is that I and the other staff members are treated with respect!  We are welcomed to work, we are thanked at the end of our shift and often told what a good job we are doing!  The few nights of getting used to the new system were time well spent!

My old customers are beginning to come by, commenting on the fact that I’m looking well and wanting to know if I have lost weight!  I just smile and say thanks!  No need to tell them it is peace on the inside that came from taking a chance and having the courage to change something that was eating away at my soul!

The World is Our Reflection

Suzie Dawson

My husband Burke also enjoyed a change of jobs recently, as did Bill.  He had been in the restaurant/bar business for 13 years and took a year off to take a job in computer software sales.  After a year of working 9-5, he was ready to go back to bartending.

He lucked into a great job on the River Walk (in San Antonio) where he works fewer hours and makes twice as much money.  His experience during that year of working a day job taught him that “the grass isn’t always greener.”  Not everyone is cut out for the 9-5 kind of job.  Thank goodness. It would make this world a very boring place.

He also experienced the same exuberance as Bill as he started his new job.  He felt he had made the right decision and was ecstatic to have more free time and make more money.  However, the excitement and newness quickly wore off.

I give this example because this happens to many of us.  We think it is the job that will make us happier and feel better inside.  Unfortunately this is not usually the case.  As the saying goes, “Wherever you go, there you are.”  How easy it is to forget that the world is a reflection of us.

Basically this means that if there are unresolved issues when you change jobs, they will reappear until you learn the lesson that has been presented and move on.  The same drunk people will continue to get on your every last nerve, the frenetic environment will cause you to be in a constant state of tension, and the very same grievances you have had with other managers will reappear with your new employers.

What is the solution?  Learn the lesson that needs to be learned.  Heal what needs to be healed within you.  Maybe the lesson is patience and understanding or maybe it is a call to connect with the peace in your soul.  If you are not sure what it is, ask for help from above.  You will get the answer.

Whatever the lesson, one thing is guaranteed; it will not be solved by complaining about it.  Remember you get what you focus your attention on.  If you keep your focus on the problem, you will get more of the problem.  Focus on solutions.Get creative.  Figure out one thing that you can do different that will change how you are reacting to the annoying situations.

Do not stay stuck in the drama.  Learn the lesson and move on.  For yourself and for the rest of the world.  Remember that you create your circumstances.  Take a chance and create new circumstances and a better life!

Dessert

The dessert pick for the week is “Conversations with God,” book 1 by Neale Donald Walsch.  Do not let the title fool you, this book is not religious, but is spiritual in nature.  This is one of my all-time favorite books!  It is for anyone searching for answers about their life journey.  It is yet another book that confirms my strong belief that our thoughts create our reality.  If you want a better life, think better thoughts!!
