Honestly Speaking

by Suzie Dawson

Recently, I have discovered the importance of being completely honest with ourselves and others. I have been working with a coaching group for addictive personalities and have found this to be a common theme- the lack of honesty. I have come to the conclusion that this is the challenge for most people- not living an authentic life.

There are too many people out there doing what they don't want to do and feeling resistant about it all. This includes their jobs, daily to-do lists, and commitments they have made with other people...the list goes on. It is a shame to see so many people dissatisfied with their lives.

I think it all goes back to honesty. If we were all really honest about what we wanted and how we felt, I don't believe this would be such an issue. It's almost as if people are feeling resigned that this is all there is for them. They've created a certain type of life and now feel stuck in it!

So what is the answer? Total honesty starting today! We cannot take back all of the times we did not speak up about what we wanted and how we were feeling. We can, however, start honoring our feelings and getting our needs met today! Personally, I think the cost is too great not to!

I believe this is how depression and other forms of withdrawal (i.e., substance abuse, workaholism, over-eating, etc.) begin. If people were really happy and doing exactly what they wanted to do, there would be no need to escape. If everyone was really honest about how they were feeling (and what they needed), there would not be repressed emotions.

In spirit of practicing what I preach, this past week I owned up to many repressed emotions with family and friends. I mean everything from deep stuff from childhood and recent stuff with friends. I have been asking that all repressed emotions from the past rise to the surface to be healed. I knew that without this release, there was little chance of me moving forward to achieve what I most desire. And rise to the surface they did. It was like an explosion that could not be stopped. I felt it come up one day and called everyone I had any type of unresolved issue with. They were all thrilled (smile!).

Actually, it was amazing the response and support I got. I believe it is because I approached it in a nonjudgemental way, not blaming others for my problems. I simply stated what happened and how I felt about it. Everything. Many tears were shed and much healing occurred.

I encourage you all to look at where you could be more authentic. Are there hurt feelings you need to own up to so they can be released. Are you living a life of choice and freedom rather than struggle and resistance? Are there times you could be saying "no" when you are saying "yes?" Is there a life purpose calling to you but you just haven't found it yet?

Ask for help with this from above (or within!). Be willing to release these emotions so that you can move forward. Forgive those that need to be forgiven (including yourself!). If you need additional support, seek outside help. This is the kind of work I (and many others) do. Remember that truth will set you free!! Many blessings to you all!

Affirmation

I am willing to be honest and fully express my feelings.

*A note on affirmations….It is okay if you don’t really believe them.  But be open to the possibility that from a different viewpoint it could be true.  Pretend or imagine that it is true.  The effect is just the same!
