Whine Selection

If It Is Tourist Season, Why Can't I Shoot Them!!

By Bill Shade

What a weekend!! One down and three to go!! Those

special times in resort towns- Easter, Memorial Day,

July Forth and Labor Day! These are the times that

some people I wait on, go out to dinner and consider

that getting their moneys worth involves abusing the

wait staff!! I know not if this is done on a conscious

level or subliminal need to feel superior. I do know,

that somewhere towards the end of each of these long

weekends, I question why I am waiter and if I really

want do this for a living! The vast majority of the

time, I enjoy my job and the people I serve. As with

all things in my life, there are times when I wish I

were elsewhere!! Example, I describe the six

different beers we serve, their country of origin and

their characteristic and wonderful drivability! The

customer then asks for a beer I did not describe, "Do

you have Iron City?" I reply that we do not, and again

list the six beers we do have, and explain this is our

entire stock of beer! Customer asks, "What do you have

on Tap?" I explain again, that we do not have draft

beer and the only beers we have are the six I have

already described- twice!! Well, the customer then

wants to know if we have Rolling Rock. Again, I state

that we have six beers, none on tap, and they are, for

the third time as follows! While this is all taking

place, I have been triple seated and I can feel

customers staring holes in my back!! Then the beer guy

wants to know why we do not carry any local beer!!

Local, being where he is from, not where we are

presently having this wonderful conversation!! The

wonder of the visitor! This type of deep personal

interaction goes on for the entire weekend (*&##$)!

Example number two: desserts. I describe all four of

our wonderful, made from scratch desserts, which do

not include sorbet. "Do you have any raspberry

sorbet?" At this point in the evening I want to

respond, "Well yes we do, however, I did not mention

that we did, because I knew that is what you wanted

and I am really trying to piss you off so you will

leave me a small, meaningless gratuity!!" Patience,

hell, I want to strangle someone!! Thank God there are

only three more left! Will I survive? Sure! Will I

have fun doing so? Not always! Will I learn more about

life and myself? Always! They always tell me either

you grow or you go!! But could I not shoot at least

ONE?

Main Dish

If Not Now, When?

By Suzie Dawson

Many of my clients come to me with a similar problem.

They are feeling stuck in an area of their life. The

result is frustration, pure, unadulterated

frustration. No one likes feeling stuck. Life is

change, and to feel stuck and stagnant is not natural.

We must let go and flow with life.

Last night I had a dream that I was walking up a very

tall slope, and at the last part of hit, I kept

sliding back down. It occurred to me when I awoke,

that what was needed was to wear a different pair of

shoes to get different results to get up that hill.

We've all heard that phrase, "Keep doing what you're

doing, and you'll keep gettin' what you're gettin'."

This is true in life, and the same thing is true in

business.

If you are unhappy with some result in your business,

whether it is low tips or small overall profits, do

something different to get new results. It seems so

simple, but we often resist this obvious answer. Why?

Because it requires change, and just this word

"change" alone, can cause us to immediately go into

the "resist mode."

It is time to get past this resistance to change. One

way to do that is to look at the consequences of not

changing. A great question to ask is "What will be

more painful, to change, or to remain the same." Pain

is a great motivator, or so says Tony Robbins.

Once you have realized that to remain the same is not

going to work for you, take the next step. If a large

change is going to be too unnerving for you, try a

small one first. It's like building a muscle. You

can start small and work your way up.

Or, you can be brave and just go for it! Why waste

any more time doing something that is not working?

Ask yourself "What is the one thing I could do right

now that would most improve my situation?" This

simple question will, more often than, provide you

with the answer you are looking for.

My challenge to you for the week is to do something

different. Be brave! Change up your routine. Try

something new that will bring you different results.

If you must, start small and work your way up, but

whatever you do, START! The time is now to start

making the changes to bring more fulfillment in your

business and in your life. If not now, when?!?

Dessert

The dessert pick for the week is the book "Who Move My

Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson, MD. This book is for

anyone who is having difficulty with change. It is

sure to inspire you! You will want to keep extras on

hand to lend to others in your life who are feeling

challenged by change as well. I have yet to come

across a more simple and delightful book on change.

And a bonus is that it can be read in an hour or two!
