Welcome to Background Information of Hospitality and Food service Thermopolium The Romans were known for the thermopolium, a forerunner of the modern day restaurant. Those small restaurants were much like corner bars (thermopolia). These thermopolia frequently had an L-shaped counter with inset jars to hold food and to keep it warm.

From the setup and use we may as well accept that thermopolia as the first "fast-food" restaurants, an early version Burger King. During the reign of terror by the Hun's visiting Europe steak tartar was first introduced.
