Welcome to Background Information of Hospitality and Food service Stagecoach stops and more About 1740 the stagecoaches got on the road. Roadside inns were the beginning of the coast to coast roadside hotel industry. Roadside inns and British flavored food were the norm till the American Revolution. At such time more and more French cuisine slipped into the daily menu of cooks throughout the colonies. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson served French style food at social events as well as their political dinners. Refugees from the French Revolution brought with them an abundance of recipes. At this point in history, stagecoach inns and taverns, felt the competition as restaurants opened their doors.
