Welcome to Background Information of Hospitality and Food service Fast food and other franchises 1970 fast food franchises are growing and American wine enters the international restaurant scene. Franchising has shaped the food service industry. By the year 2000 there are over 102,000 franchised restaurants in the United States. About 1/3 of these restaurants are company owned, 2/3 are franchisee owned. It all started with A&W Root Beer of Los Angeles in the 1920s. Coca Cola of Atlanta Georgia built its business by franchising its product through independent bottlers. Not much happened with food franchising until David Edgerton and his partner James McLamore franchised their first Burger King Restaurant in 1954. Next Ray Kroc received permission from the McDonald brothers to franchise the Golden Arches. By now, the year 2000, Burger King, Chili's, Denny's, Domino's Pizza, Dunkin Donuts, Hardees, KFC, Long John Silvers, McDonald, Pizza Hut, Wendy's to name a few are well known franchise companies. Franchise companies have much in common as they provide... ...Quality - their products are constantly monitored and kept at the set standard. ...Service - fast service. ...Cleanliness - franchise units most always are cleaner than independent owned food outlets. ...Value - franchise outlets offer a good value for the customers money.
