Welcome
to U.S. history!
 | 1793 April, Genet affair strained relations with France. Genet, French
minister to the U.S. had found considerable popular enthusiasm after arrival in Charleston
South Carolina. Therefor he authorized privately owned American vessels to seize British
ships in the name of France. Such actions clearly violated U.S. neutrality and invited
English retaliation and put Jefferson who was pro-French on the spot. |
 | Jefferson had no choice but to condemn Genets imprudent actions.
|
 | 1793 April 22, Washington issued Proclamation of Neutrality.
