Welcome
to U.S. history!
 | 1798 June- July, Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts. At
first the Alien Enemies Law vested the president with extra ordinary wartime powers. The
second act, the Alien Law empowered the president to expel any foreigner simply by
executive decree. The third act, the Naturalization Law was the most flagrantly political
of the group. This act established a fourteen year probation period before foreigners
could apply for full U.S. citizenship. This act was actually designed to stop new
immigrants from being able to vote. |
 | 1798 Provisional Army was formed.
|
 | 1798 November - December, Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions
protested the Alien and Sedition Acts. |
