 | 1820 During the 1820s Southerners became increasingly fearful of
federal encroachment on the rights of the states. |
 | **Behind this concern was the idea to keep a good thing going, and since
the invention of the "Cotton Gin" slavery was good for it was profitable. None
of the slave owners wanted his property taken away from him and slaves were property. |
 | Non slave owners did not want the government to tell them what to do,
after all those in the North were nothing but trouble.
